Tree rules in Adelaide Hills
- The regulated tree rules apply in Hills townships and the Hills Face Zone, but not in the Productive Rural Landscape, Recreation, Resource Extraction or Conservation zones. Your zone decides which rules apply.
- The Native Vegetation Act covers most of the council area, so many native trees outside townships need Native Vegetation Council consent rather than a council approval.
- Council's guidance is that dead trees, and trees within 20 m of a house in a bushfire risk overlay, don't need development approval. Under the native vegetation rules, though, a large tree (2 m or more around the trunk) within 20 m of a house still needs written approval from the CFS Chief Officer.
- Council runs roadside slashing in October and January and maintains Asset Protection Zones. Clearing on your own property is your responsibility.
State-wide rules on regulated and significant trees apply here too. See the short version.
